Day 16

The beep began to quicken and Pat’s mind whizzed through the many times she had pressed the red button on her fob and the noise would subside. But now she seemed immobile. Julie began to panic as the pitch grew higher and more demanding.

Pat focussed on the panel with a friendly urgent push from Julie. 8899. Nothing. The sound was now hitting screech pitch and Pat felt her heart miss a beat. Any minute now the whole ninety decibels would announce to the world that the bungalow was being burgled. She pressed 9988. Silence.

A silence as deafening as the beeping.  Except for two hearts thumping in rib cages. They both let out loud giggles – nerves can get you that way.
