Katie

The next set of ten poems will be about animals so here goes.

Katie (aka Munchkin)

Katie is a black cat who knows what you think in a blink.
Her smooth midnight coat shrouds her throughout
Except for the face, where an unexpected white chin
Has tricked her yet saved her from wild witches abroad.

She is lean and feline, catwoman intact and compact
And middle aged spread she has designated to others.
Her leaps are dramatic, jump-jet into the void without any fear
A fusion of art, theatre, circus, pantomime combined into one.

A curious cat, she follows you round without sound.
Waiting behind the door, whatever the occasion to greet,
And appears like fog, intangible and unconfined to this world.
She stares from the sill into another life beyond we don’t see.

And she watches on guard, fighting foes that begin from within.
Round swirls as she sleeps, a Catherine wheel of black waiting to ignite,
But gently snoring, attention on her though soundly she sleeps
And dreams and plans drift through her brain, no malice in her head.

Katie is a model cat that is your friend in need indeed,
Settling on your lap, pounded into submission to a shape she recommends.
Is she a bringer of good luck? Of that there is no doubt
as she snuggles uptight, portents are good and she yawns to say ‘goodnight.’
