 A Month in Autumn - 03

Harvest Home

Bring the pears and let’s make cider to quaff.

Bring the cakes and sponges from the village bake-off.

Bring the apples shining crimson in gazed white bowls.

Bring the rustic, plaited loaf and crusty, braided rolls.

Corn dolly making and onion stringing,

Thanks and prayers and church bells ringing.

Bring the grapes and the bottles of wine.

Bring the roast wrapped up in twisted twine.

Bring the white wool combed and twice carded.

Bring heritage vegetables highly regarded.

Grain is in and thanks celebrated in home and farm.

The spirit’s last hiding place woven into the charm.

The last sheaf is cut, the last ear is cleaved.

Dug in new year earth, goodness throughout the soil be breathed.
