Day 47

Two ginger biscuits later and Sophie was signing the paperwork.
Mr Baines dutifully pointed to crosses on the paper and spaces for dates. Sophie obliged.

“So,” Mr Baines continued in the dull monotone that he has perfected over the years for these occasions. With enough gravitas that is needed to show clients how important this work was and yet in a flat enough tone that showed little emotion – professional and calm. Unless of course, biscuits were involved – then a whole new register of tones was adopted.

He continued with the ‘ever so ‘umble’ voice. “So, the five thousand pounds will be forwarded to you at the end of the process when the estate is finally concluded. Would you like us to make the phone call or …”

He did not get chance to finish. “No! No, I will do that. I am sure it will be better coming from me, you know girl to girl thing.”

Mr Baines closed the door behind her. He was thinking that this called for more tea. She was thinking about her new plan.
