From time to time I consult the table
Remember the elements as far as I’m able.
The symbol for Potassium? the pub quizzer demand of the dopes
And my brain gets scrambled with thoughts of isotopes.
A column here, a grouping there, properties and atomic weights
Symbols, letters, colours, alternative diagrams with different dates.
What does it mean all this classification -
A series of boxes in bright pigmentation?
Second f-block series or Janet left-step
Swirling round and I am out of step.
‘Potassium is K’ the quizmaster grins
and the Head of Chemistry’s table wins.
He laughs out loud, this victor on helium
His squeaky voice brags in sheer delirium.
And I think ‘He He’.
