Sunshine lost

Wow a third of the way through and I'm really enjoying this challenge.

Sunshine lost – it might be Spring but 2013 has seen very little of the sun – it’s like living in a permanent eclipse.

Sunshine lost

Cold, grey and endless cloud
Covers the land like an ancient shroud.
We heard the rumours, we had the warning
But we never believed the truth was dawning.
Bitter, ice and remorseless chill,
The warmth and glow are memories still
Engulfed by the blanket of power bright
That lengthened our day and shortened the night.
That burnished orb, that treasured land
Smiling and singing we danced hand in hand.
But we never imagined as the sun went down then
That we would shiver and starve until we saw it again.
And the new day dawns and the Sun god appears
To nourish the soul and chase off night’s fears.
For the dark heralds bleak and frosty warships
And the battle for life holds its breath in the eclipse.
Helios the victor, with his fire darting steeds
In his golden chariot, provides for our needs.
And we worship the warmth that overwhelms our frame.
One day he will return back whence he came.
And we will all wonder and curse loudly his name.
But we are the thieves and we bear the shame.
